Roger Lee Hill Convicted Murder of Cold Blooded Murder Denied Parole in California

A convicted murderer was denied parole Friday by the Board of Prison Terms, the Sonoma County District Attorney’s office announced today. Roger Lee Hill was convicted in 1982 of first-degree murder for the 1980 killing of 47-year-old Santa Rosa resident Ralph Currier. “We’re pleased this murderer was denied parole,” District Attorney Jill Ravitch said in a statement.

Ravitch said the victim’s spouse still lives with the memories of Hill’s “vicious attack” on her husband. Hill stabbed Currier to death in the couple’s home. Prosecutors said a 23-year-old Hill entered the couple’s mobile home in the early morning of Nov. 23, 1980 with the intention of burglarizing it. Currier’s wife happened upon Hill when she got up from bed to use the bathroom and screamed after he pushed her to the ground.

Currier woke and confronted Hill, who stabbed Currier 17 times in the front and back of his body. Currier later died at the hospital. Prosecutors said the board found Hill still poses an unreasonable risk of harm to the community. Hill will not be eligible for parole for three more years, but he can petition the board to consider parole after 18 months, prosecutors said.

Santa Cruz Co. Deputies Arrest Kyle Bingham And Frank Harris And Seize 200 Pot Plants And A Hash Oil Lab

Santa Cruz County sheriff’s deputies last week arrested two men and seized more than 200 marijuana plants and a hash oil extraction lab in a three-unit an apartment building near Capitola, deputies said.

Both of the men arrested last Wednesday had legal recommendations to grow medical marijuana for personal use in the county but well exceeded the limit of 99 plants per parcel and were engaged in selling the drug for income, sheriff’s Sgt. Kelly Kent said.

Deputies used a search warrant last Wednesday to enter the apartment building on Felt Street near 17th Avenue in the unincorporated Live Oak area of Santa Cruz County west of Capitola, Kent said.

Inside the three rental units there, deputies recovered more than 200 marijuana plants, 10 pounds of processed marijuana buds, the illegal hash oil extraction lab, two guns and a quantity of methamphetamine, according to Kent.

The extraction lab involved a dangerous chemical process using butane gas to produce hash oil, also known as “butane honey oil,” Kent said.

Kyle Bingham, 28, was arrested on suspicion of cultivating marijuana, operating an illegal hash oil extraction lab and possession of methamphetamine, deputies said.

Frank Harris, 29, was arrested on suspicion of cultivation and possession of marijuana for sale, Kent said.

Deputies had received reports from citizens about constant noise from indoor growing equipment and unpleasant odors from the building and fears over bad electrical writing that could endanger nearby homes, according to Kent.

County code enforcers cited the apartment building’s owner with a notice of repairs for faulty and unsafe electrical wiring that had been altered by the suspects for the pot growing operation, he said.

Former Hedge Fund Manager, Lawrence Goldfarb, Sentenced To 14 Months In Prison For $6m Fraud Scheme In San Francisco

A former hedge fund manager has been sentenced in federal court in San Francisco to 14 months in prison for bilking investors out of $6 million and failing to pay promised restitution, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Lawrence Goldfarb, 55, formerly of San Anselmo, was sentenced Tuesday in the courtroom of U.S. District Judge William Alsup after pleading guilty to wire fraud in April, prosecutors said.

Goldfarb was the managing partner of Baystar Capital II, a firm that made primarily short-term investments but also made various “side pocket” investments that were difficult to value.

One such investment was $8.4 million in Island Fund LLC in 2003, which returned more than $16 million over the next several years, prosecutors said.

Goldfarb then used that money for other investments, including companies where he had a financial interest, while not informing Baystar Capital II’s investors.

When investors asked about the funds, he falsely told them they were not eligible for distributions, prosecutors said. His scheme cost the investors an estimated $6 million.

In March 2011, Goldfarb agreed to pay the investors $12 million on a payment schedule, but he stopped making payments and was found to be spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on private air travel, vacations and Golden State Warriors tickets, prosecutors said.

Because of that, the court allowed his prosecution to proceed.

Goldfarb will begin serving his federal prison sentence on Nov. 4 and will also serve three years of supervised release once he is released from prison, prosecutors said.

Police arrested nine people Wednesday in connection with a marijuana grow house operation in Dublin.

Dublin police conducted a three-week investigation and surveillance operation on a residence in the 5400 block of Aspen Street that led to the discovery and seizure of 1,000 plants, 82 pounds of processed marijuana and more than $10,000, police said.

Police said each room of the residence was used to grow marijuana. The residence had a complex venting system to hide the smell of marijuana.

San Francisco Case Against Leland Yee, ‘Shrimp Boy’ Will Be Divided Before Trial

The case against 29 defendants including suspended state Sen. Leland Yee and convicted Chinatown gang leader Raymond “Shrimp Boy” Chow will have to be split into smaller groups before the case can go to trial, federal prosecutors said in a hearing in San Francisco today.

But prosecutors are still in the process of turning over vast amounts of evidence in the case and argued today that it would be premature to discuss groupings of defendants until defense attorneys have access to all of the materials, prosecutors said.

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer agreed and sought at today’s status conference to have the evidence disseminated as quickly as possible.

Defense attorneys argued the defendants are likely to be grouped along two different criminal enterprises alleged in the 228-count indictment, but prosecutors said there is considerable overlap in the evidence and investigation between the two groups.

Yee is accused of conducting an ongoing criminal enterprise with former San Francisco school board president Keith Jackson, who allegedly solicited bribes and campaign contributions in exchange for political favors by Yee.

That enterprise allegedly included a never-completed plot by Yee, Jackson and Daly City dentist Wilson Lim to import guns from the Philippines.

Chow, Jackson and 15 others are accused in a separate racketeering charge of conducting an organized crime enterprise that included selling drugs and guns, money laundering, gun sales, schemes to buy stolen property and a murder-for-hire plot that was never carried out.

Several other defendants have not been implicated in either racketeering enterprise, so how their cases will be handled must be decided as well.

Prosecutors said in a court filing Wednesday that they expect the vast majority of the defendants will not go to trial, potentially simplifying the case.

They did not specify why the defendants’ cases would not reach trial but one possibility is that they may plead guilty and reach a deal to testify on behalf of the prosecution.

Of the 29 defendants named in the indictment, nine remain in custody including Chow, while 18 have been released on bond including Yee and Jackson and two remain at large, according to court records.

Yee, Chow and Jackson were arrested in an FBI sweep on March 26 and Yee withdrew his candidacy for California Secretary of State a day later. He was suspended from his state Senate seat in April.

Another hearing will be held Monday in the courtroom of U.S. District Judge Joseph Spero to discuss wiretap evidence, which prosecutors expect to complete turning over to defense attorneys by the end of the month. One remaining issue is whether the defendants in custody can access audio evidence while in jail.

The next hearing before Breyer, the trial judge assigned to the case, is scheduled for Nov. 12.

An Oakland man has been arrested in Nevada in connection with a carjacking case out of Half Moon Bay, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said today.

Armando Mendoza, 20, was arrested by the Winnemucca Police Department on July 25 on a warrant for carjacking and has been extradited back to San Mateo County, sheriff’s office officials said in a statement.

Mendoza was allegedly involved in a Jan. 9 carjacking in the parking lot of the Hilltop Mobile Home Park in Half Moon Bay.

The victim told investigators a man, later identified as Mendoza, got into her car and forced her to drive him to San Mateo, where he got out of the car and ran away, officials said.

The victim was not injured in the incident.

Mendoza is also considered a suspect in the theft of a vehicle from Oakland the previous night, officials said.

Sunshine Rayna Anderson Gets 6 Years in Prison on Heroin Charges in Santa Rosa, California

A Santa Rosa woman was sentenced in Sonoma County Superior Court this week to six years in prison for four heroin-related offenses. Sunshine Rayna Anderson, 39, was convicted of possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia between Nov. 29, 2013, and May 4 when she tried to bring heroin into the Sonoma County jail, Sonoma County District Attorney Jill Ravitch said. Anderson faced 11 years in prison, and as part of a plea agreement a fifth case involving possession of heroin was dismissed, Ravitch said.

Anderson was part of a drug sales ring that involved her husband William “Billy” Oliver Anderson, 45, of Santa Rosa, and Matthew Dean Dominguez, 32, of Santa Rosa, Ravitch said. Sunshine Anderson will serve her six-year term in the Sonoma County jail, Ravitch said. “This six-year sentence is well deserved for distributing dangerous highly addictive drugs such as heroin in Sonoma County,” Ravitch said. Heroin is growing in popularity in part as a result of a growing trend of prescription pill abuse, Ravitch said. Sunshine Anderson was arrested on the drug charges by the Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park and Petaluma police departments and by a county sheriff’s deputy.

Dominguez provided a “stash house” for William Anderson to store heroin, and heroin and firearms were found in his home, Ravitch said. He was convicted of possession of heroin for sale and possession of a sawed-off shotgun and sentenced to a jail term rehabilitation program and 36 months probation, Ravitch said. William Anderson was previously sentenced to four years and eight months in the county jail for his role in three of the possession of heroin cases, Ravitch said.

Chrome Revolver Bandit Sentenced to More than 800 Years in Prison San Mateo County, California

A man who was dubbed the “Chrome Revolver Bandit” after a series of 14 armed robberies in San Mateo, Santa Clara and San Francisco counties was sentenced today to more than 800 years in prison, according to District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. Ricky Renee Sanders, 36, was sentenced to 834 years to life in prison today following his conviction in February on 44 felony charges including armed robbery, attempted robbery, assault with a firearm, and mayhem in connection with the robberies, Wagstaffe said.

He will be eligible for parole in approximately 780 years. The severe sentence, one of the highest of its kind recorded in the county, reflects the fact that Sanders had prior convictions, Wagstaffe said “He is a poster boy for the three strikes law and a danger to the community,” Wagstaffe said, referring to a state law that imposes stiffer penalties for criminals with prior felony convictions. Sanders robbed stores including PetSmart, Beverages & More, PetCo and Gamestop in 2011 armed with a large shiny silver handgun that earned his nickname, according to prosecutors.

In one of the robberies at a San Mateo PetSmart on Oct. 8, 2011, Sanders shot a manager in the leg, according to prosecutors. He was arrested after robbing a store in San Jose on Nov. 1, 2011. Sander’s defense attorney argued during the trial that the armed bandit was covered up during the robberies and witnesses may have incorrectly identified Sanders. The defense also argued that the robberies were committed by Sanders’ friend, Charlie Hustle, whom Sanders claimed to have often loaned his car, ATM PIN and both his cellphones.

A man and a woman were arrested Thursday on suspicion of growing marijuana, running a butane hash oil lab and trafficking narcotics out of a home in San Francisco’s Miraloma Park neighborhood.

San Francisco residents Alexander Lioulios, 33, and Lauren Todd, 26, were targeted by narcotics investigators after a report in June of a possible marijuana cultivation operation.

A strong marijuana stench in the area led to the investigation and a search warrant for the property was served on Thursday, police said.

Investigators allegedly found a marijuana growing operation with an electrical bypass system in place. PG&E officials determined that electricity was allegedly being stolen, police said.

A butane honey oil lab was also discovered at the home, according to police.

Honey oil is the term for concentrated cannabis oil. The extraction process uses butane and is highly volatile, often leading to explosions at home labs where pilot lights in a water heater or other appliances can ignite a fire.

There was also evidence of alleged narcotics trafficking, along with 84 marijuana plants growing, and more than 10 pounds of dried processed marijuana and 82 containers of concentrated THC oil found in the home, according to police.

The pair was arrested on suspicion of illegal marijuana cultivation, utility services theft, marijuana sales, maintaining premises where controlled substances are used or sold, manufacturing a controlled substance and conspiracy, according to police.
